Can Laser Eye Surgery (Lasik) Fix Astigmatism?

Nov 28, 2022

Many people falsely assume that laser vision correction surgery is only for people with long-distance blurred vision (myopia). Today, many types of laser eye surgeries exist for all sorts of vision conditions, including astigmatism.

What Is Astigmatism?

Astigmatism is a common refractive error that occurs in the cornea's curvature.

In a normal eye, the rounded cornea only allows a single ray of light to enter, creating one focal point on the retina. When a single ray hits your retina’s light-sensitive cells, you have clear vision.

With an oblong-shaped cornea, multiple light rays can enter your eye creating multiple focal points that cause blurry vision.

You may have astigmatism if you experience blurred vision at all distances, vision fatigue, squinting, or headaches. An Optometrist can diagnose this with a basic eye exam.

How Does Laser Eye Surgery Fix Astigmatism?

The laser removes small amounts of corneal tissue to correct the asymmetrical curvature of the cornea. The surgeon will create a flap on the outermost surface of your cornea. After partially separating this layer, the surgeon uses the laser to reshape and recontour your cornea until it’s rounded.

Astigmatism is one of the only eye conditions that can be entirely cured through laser eye surgery, offering permanent results.

Are You a Good Candidate for Laser Eye Surgery?

If you’re interested in laser eye surgery for your astigmatism, the first step is to determine whether or not you're eligible. Most healthy adults with astigmatism and stable vision prescriptions will qualify although you will need to see an Ophthalmologist for a full assessment.
