Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic Retinopathy is an eye disease caused by complications of diabetes. It is the most common cause of blindness in the working age population. Diabetes causes damage to the small blood vessels that nourish the retina. These blood vessels may expand and leak fluid. Fluid that leaks at the macula (central retina) can cause macular oedema which may cause reduced visual acuity. Some blood vessels may become closed and abnormal new blood vessels may grow, which can leak and cause vitreous haemorrhage.

Treatment for this eye disease involves injections of intravitreal steroids (Osurdex) or anti-VEGF drugs (e.g. Lucentis, Eylea , avastin). Laser is also used in some cases to treat diabetic retinopathy. In more severe cases, surgery may be necessary.
